Don’t just insure your home, protect everything inside it too

Your home is two things at once; the building itself, and the life you’ve built inside it – and both need protecting.

Buildings insurance covers the structure should the worst happen, for instance a fire or flooding, and is compulsory when taking out a mortgage. Meanwhile, contents insurance protects everything within your home, whether that’s your sofa, laptop or jewellery. While not mandatory, when combined with buildings insurance it forms a complete safety net for the place and items you’ve worked so hard for.

Tailored advice built around your life and budget

Providing advice on building and contents insurance isn’t as simple as having you answer a quick questionnaire before handing you the cheapest policy possible. Instead, it’s about making sure that if the worst happens, you, your family and your home are truly covered. A few extra pounds in your pocket today is cold comfort if your protection fails you when you need it most.

Of course, making sure it fits comfortably within your budget is just as crucial, and that’s why our dedicated protection advisors take the time to get to know you and your circumstances, so you can get the best of both worlds.

That dedication matters, especially when your situation isn’t straightforward. Most mortgage brokers handle protection as part of the package, and for simple cases that works perfectly well. But complex cases deserve a specialist who focuses on insurance and nothing else, which is exactly why we’ve built a team of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, but it’s strongly recommended. If you own your home, you should have both. If you’re renting, buildings insurance is your landlord’s responsibility, but you should still take out contents insurance to protect your own possessions. Many insurers offer combined buildings and contents policies, which can be more convenient and sometimes cheaper than buying two separate policies.

Most buildings insurance policies cover damage caused by fire, flooding, storms, subsidence, burst pipes, falling trees, and vehicle impact. It usually also covers damage from vandalism and theft (for example, a broken door or window). Some policies include liability cover if someone is injured on your property. Always check your policy carefully, as exclusions vary between providers.

Standard contents policies often exclude general wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown, and damage caused by pests. High-value items like jewellery or artwork may only be covered up to a set limit unless you specify them individually. Accidental damage is also frequently excluded from basic policies and must be added as an optional extra. Items left unattended in a car may not be covered either.

Accidental damage cover protects against unintentional, one-off incidents that cause sudden damage to your home or belongings, such as spilling wine on a carpet, putting a foot through the ceiling, or smashing a television. It’s usually an optional add-on to both buildings and contents policies. Without it, damage caused by accidents in the home is typically excluded from your standard policy.
